About me
The kickoff at Illinois Beach in September 2023 was my first foray into land stewardship. Armed with a bow saw and a lopper, I followed a group of 10 into a thicket of buckthorn. They lit a fire and told us to start cutting. By break time we had cleared a view to a prairie dune another group had opened.
“This is the best thing you could be doing,” said my friend, Jerome McDonnell, and I believed him. Exhausted and exhilarated, I was in love.
Like other love interests, it makes me want to be a better person. I want to look at a place and understand what it needs, learn the names of the residents and their preferences, understand effective ecosystem medicine. I want to help other humans discover the possibilities. Caregiving makes me care.
How did you get hooked? What enabled you to take on leadership roles? Each of us is a success story we can learn from as we build the restoration community.
